Celebrates Fourth of July
The first
annual Spirit of Calabasas Foundation (S.O.C.F.) Fourth of July
Parade made its debut as residents came forth filled with
the spirit of the holiday. Mayor Dennis and Carol Washburn
led the way, accompanied by Plaquemines Parish President
Benny Rousselle and Parish President Assistant Janis Buras,
visiting dignitaries from Louisiana.
Firetrucks from the Calabasas Fire
Department, representatives from the L.A. County Sheriff,
The Navy Color Guard from Reseda High and the Air Force
Color Guard from Canoga Park High provided a traditional
beginning to the Parade.
The Master of Ceremonies for the
Parade was NBC-TV sportscaster Fred Roggin. Other entrants
included Calabasas City Council and families, the Boys Club
1946 Firetruck, and classic car from the Godfrey family,
Leon family, James Foley and San Fernando Valley Model A
Club. Music was provided by the Birmingham High School
Marching Drums, the Markley Bros. Rock and Roll Band, the
Calabasas High School Jazz Combo, and the Cala Brassas Brass
Band. Mariachi music sponsored by La Salsa restaurant
rounded off the music. The Saddlerock Savvy Club, Hidden
Hills Cowgirls, and other horseback riders participated in
the parade.
At the end of the parade route, children were
able to drive the go carts from Zoom Go Karts and see a wild
animal show as well as snack on refreshments donated by
Ralph's and Gelson's markets.

At the annual
City of Calabasas Fireworks program, the SOCF presented a plaque to the City
of Calabasas, recognizing the city's unwavering support of
the SOCF mission. The City of Calabasas also presented
Plaquemines Parish President Benny Rousselle and Parish
President Assistant Janis Buras letters of recognition.
